The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
